The Benefits of CBD Oil

CBD oil is creating quite a stir across the world as medical professionals and users tout its benefits. CBD (Cannabidiol) fast becoming known as a cure-all for conditions like anxiety, depression, pain, acne, and a plethora of other conditions.

Professionals are the experts we rely on to help up sort out the hype to find what’s true and what’s hype.

The World Health Organization (WTO) reports that CBD presents no significant side effects and has medicinal use ranging from anxiety relief to seizure prevention.

This oil seems to be the superstar and champion of health and wellness as far as publications like Shape is concerned. Not only that, but it has entered the beauty industry as well.

If you’re first thought is that CBD is psychoactive and will get you high, you are mistaking this compound with THC. CBD doesn’t promote intoxication, but it does help with pain, inflammation, and other health conditions with a very short list of side effects.

More people are turning to CBD oil to treat a variety of ailments, using it in its variety of applications like vaping, sublingual tinctures, topical creams and ointments, consumable treats and oils, and capsules.

Dr. Perry Solomon says this oil will not work for everything that ails you. One example he used is if you get bronchitis, you need the Z-pack because CBD cream won’t cure that.

Some believe the placebo effect of CBD oil is stronger than the actual effectiveness, but there is so little research and evidence at this time to support either side of this beneficial oil. The good news is that it isn’t harmful either way you go.

What is CBD Oil Good For?

CBD Oil

The uses for CBD oil are essentially in the begging phases, but here are some areas where it is being widely used today.

Epilepsy and Seizures

Epilepsy is any type of abnormal electrical activity that occurs in the brain. Conventional medicines include anti-seizure drugs designed to block abnormal activities in the brain, but as a result, side effects like skin conditions, bone degeneration, vitamin B deficiency, and other side effects.

The rise of CBD oil for controlling seizures has raised awareness of its effectiveness. The New England Journal of Medicine published their results from a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial that explored how CBD effects the brain on young adults with a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome. This is a type of epilepsy that is triggered by fever. They did see a drop of seizure frequency by an average of 38.9 percent.

Pain

Pain relief is probably the initial benefits discovered from using CBD oil. It is believed to engage with brain receptors and the immune system to aid in the reduction of inflammation. Since pain is primarily caused by some type of inflammation, it makes sense that it works.

With the opioid crisis in full swing, this study at UC Berkeley tracked patients using opioids as pain relievers. When some subjects used cannabis in place of opioids, most of the subjects reported pain relief equal to that of taking opioids without the unwanted side effects. While further research is needed, this could be a huge step towards solving the opioid crisis.

Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, CBD skin care products are popular and beneficial. Research shows it is an effective treatment for acne. It is believed to reduce inflammation caused by sebum in the glands that result in breakouts.

CBD products for anti-aging are also available in creams, serums, cleansers, and other products, but there are not enough studies or other evidence to show it works as an anti-aging agent.

Mood Disorders and Anxiety

Studies on people who suffer from anxiety and mood disorders have found that the chemical compound in cannabis sativa produces anxiolytic-like and antidepressant-like effects. The abstract for this is found here.

CBD has been confirmed to help relax and calm people own, decreasing anxiety with a dosage of 300-600 milligrams of CBD. Before you choose this option for mood disorders or anxiety, it is recommended that you speak with your doctor and/or your psychiatrist.

Diabetes

The benefits of CBD oil for diabetes is rarely publicized, though this published study in Neuropharmacology reports promising results in non-obese, diabetes-prone female mice.

While there is not enough evidence to prove it will cure or benefit diabetes, there are conditions caused by diabetes that could be helped by CBD. Remember to consult your doctor first.

Degenerative Diseases

If you know someone who suffers from Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis, these reports may give you some hope. The World Health Organization is advocating CBD as a therapeutic treatment for these cognitive and brain disorders. Even with these and other reports, more clinical trials are needed to gather more evidence.

Insomnia

Insomnia includes the inability to get ample sleep and to have trouble staying asleep. CBD oil may come to the rescue and help you fall asleep and stay asleep so you can experience a healthy and restful night’s sleep.

Be aware that the dosage of CBD oil or whatever product you use, is crucial when related to sleep. It is recommended to start with 20-40 milligrams and increase the dosage if needed. Make sure to do your research because higher levels of CBD oil will cause jitters and insomnia.

Inflammation

Inflammation

As discussed previously, CBD has anti-inflammatory properties which is what makes it such an effective solution for anxiety, insomnia, and epilepsy. Due to these properties, it is best applied orally (vaporized, ingested, or sublingual) since topical applications have yet to be backed by clinical studies.

Psychosis

CBD is considered a legitimate, effective antipsychotic. This abstract of a study performed on subjects with schizophrenia claimed it to be “a new class of treatment” of psychosis.

Crohn’s Disease and IBD

People with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and Crohn’s disease may benefit from the use of CBD. Because of its promising anti-inflammatory properties, it may extend to many inflammatory conditions like Crohn’s and IBD. This publication shows a lot of initial evidence, but not many clinical studies yet.

Cancer

Evidence that CBD oil may be an effective cancer treatment is growing. It can at least ease the symptoms associated with chemotherapy and cancer itself. The Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics published this study in 2006. It discovered, for the first time, that CBD can selectively and potently deter the growth of different breast tumors.

CBD Heart Health

Finally, CBD has the potential to protect the human heat from vascular damage caused by inflammation, type 2 diabetes, or high glucose levels in the body. The British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology published this relevant study in 2013.

While more studies and clinical trials are needed, CBD had the potential to be an effective alternative to conventional blood pressure and other traditional medications.

CBD obviously has a lot of potential for replacing many conventional medications and treatments across medical conditions. Will further evidence promote its value and create a demand, or will its vast possible uses be a deterrent to its value to the common good?
